SIRVA Vaccine Injury Explained: What VAERS Data Reveals About Shoulder Injuries After Vaccination

by | Aug 7, 2025 | Vaccine Injury

Shoulder pain after a vaccine may seem minor, but for some, it can lead to long-lasting damage. SIRVA, or Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration, occurs when a vaccine is injected too high or too deep into the shoulder joint. This injury is increasingly reported in the U.S., and some victims may qualify for compensation through the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP).

What Is SIRVA?

SIRVA is not caused by the contents of the vaccine itself, but rather by how the shot is administered. If the needle enters the shoulder joint or bursa instead of the deltoid muscle, it can trigger inflammation, pain, and limited mobility. Common diagnoses associated with SIRVA include:

  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)
  • Rotator cuff injuries

Symptoms typically begin within 24 to 48 hours of receiving a vaccine and may last for weeks, months, or longer without proper treatment.

What VAERS Data Tells Us About SIRVA

The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) helps researchers track adverse events after vaccination. A 2022 study reviewing VAERS data identified:

  • 305 confirmed SIRVA cases, including
  • 28 cases linked to COVID-19 vaccinations
  • 76% of patients were female, with an average age of 51
  • Common symptoms included pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and swelling
  • Many patients required physical therapy, cortisone injections, or surgery
  • Full recovery was uncommon; some patients experienced long-term disability

Can You Get Compensation for a SIRVA Injury?

Yes, if your injury meets certain criteria, you may be eligible to file a claim through the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP).

To qualify:

  • Symptoms must have started within 48 hours of vaccination
  • The vaccine must be covered under the VICP (influenza, TDAP, etc.)
  • The injury must last more than six months, or require surgical intervention

*Note: COVID-19 vaccines are not yet covered under the traditional VICP but may soon be added.
